Publisher of Red Mole

[edit]

Actually, the IGM did publish "The Red Mole". Maybe later they changed the name to "Red Weekly", but I have had the "Red Mole" in my hands quite often enough. There is also this famous photo of John Lennon holding a copy thf "Red Mole" at some demonstration. --84.129.105.221 15:39, 23 Sep 2004 (UTC)

A Google search turned out this interview of Tariq Ali with John Lennon for the "Red Mole" ", 1971. : http://homepage.ntlworld.com/carousel/pob12.html

See also Tariq Alis account here: http://squawk.ca/lbo-talk/0002/1782.html where T.A. mentions that he "suggested that Robin Blackburn, who had recently joined the IMG and was an editor of The Red Mole, might join us and he agreed. " --84.129.105.221 15:47, 23 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Indeed, it was Black Dwarf which was broader, and though Red Weekly looked broader at the beggining, it was indeed an IMG project. --Duncan 17:40, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ireland

[edit]

I just discussed this comments "They were firm believers in Leon Trotsky's theory of permanent revolution going so far as to claim that the IRA's bombing campaign in London indicated that the permanent revolution was coming to Britain. " with three former IMG leaders. They were in different currents of the IMG, but all deny this accuracy of this comment. --Duncan 17:40, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have pinned this down. In 1968, International described the civil rights movement in Northern Ireland under the headline 'Permanent Revolution comes to the UK'.

Fair use

[edit]

To resolve the notes below, I have email permission from Chris Brooks, who handles copyright of the International Socialist Group, the current successor of the International Marxist Group. He writes: "We are happy to license this and other cover images from the IMG and ISG to Wikipedia under the GFDL. Our general policy is to not copyright our newspapers and booklets, including this one, since they fall quickly out of print. We are happy for these covers to be perpetually free for unlimited distribution, modification and application by all users in all media." --Duncan 15:30, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:IMGcowley.jpg

[edit]

Image:IMGcowley.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

What is the position on BBC footage on you Tube, Clip on You tube doesn't seem to be from either of 'offical' BBC profiles? Sfan00 IMG (talk) 14:29, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The YouTuve clip has the BBC 3 station ident on the logo. I don't know who put it on YouTube, but I ma personally familiar with the participants. The clip seems to be a direct copy of the BBC programme, and it accurately reflects their views. The programme does make the claim that the IMG took a different approach to the squatters struggles. I can't see this issue. --Duncan (talk) 15:03, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's an issue because it's genrally considered bad form to link to copyvios from Wikipedia. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 01:48, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I am using a reference. It's not clear to me that it's a copyright violation, and we dn't need permission from the copyright owner to cite a reference.--Duncan (talk) 14:43, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A little light relief

[edit]

I can't help but feel that this article shares a fault with its subject, namely a tendency to take itself rather too seriouly. I therefore offer two sets of verses which seem to be to speak a lot of truth about the IMG in a light hearted way.

The first is a poem written by Adrian Mitchell after the split in the Black Dwarf editorial board. The original can be found in Tariq Ali's magisterial work The Coming British Revolution

'I'm an entrist centrist Pabloite workerist,
Sweet Fourth International and never been kissed,
I've got a mass Red Base that's why I'd rather sit on the floor,
If you're looking for a vanguard better join Securicor,

My daddy was opportunistic my mother was mystified,
I want to be a movement but there's no one on my side.'

Tariq Ali was characteristically scornful of this poem in the book I've just mentioned.( To be fair to him at least the title of the book is still relevant.)

Talking of Tariq Ali the following was sung in the bar at the NUS Conference in Liverpool in 1974 to the tune of 'Sweet Betsy from Pike'

I met Tariq Ali on the Tube yesterday,
A bloated Red Mole in a terrible way,
He said he'd been on the Red Circle since nine,
But he just couldn't find the Majority Line.

IMG IMG fear and the dread of the whole bourgeoisie,
IMG IMG volumes and volumes of bankrupt theory.

I wonder if we could get these in to the article in some way that accords with Wikipedia guideliines.

Don't bother for the second poem, you would need to put a stress on the long "o" in "theory" for it to 'almost' scan. Philip Cross (talk) 16:14, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A serious point

[edit]

“By 1977, when the leadership team around Tariq Ali had started the organisation on the road towards Socialist Challenge”. I don't think that at that point in the IMG's history you can talk of the, or even a, leadership team being "around" Tariq. THe majority leadership was led John Ross and Brian Grogan.
